As North America’s largest transportation network, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) serves 15.3 million people across a 5,000-square-mile region spanning New York City, Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut through its six agencies. The MTA operates the nation’s largest bus fleet and more subway and commuter rail cars than all other U.S. transit systems combined. This network facilitates approximately 2.6 billion annual trips, supporting one-third of the nation’s mass transit users and two-thirds of its commuter rail passengers. With a record 329 million crossings in 2019, MTA Bridges and Tunnels alone carries more vehicles than any other bridge and tunnel authority nationwide, underscoring the MTA’s vital role as the lifeblood of the New York City area.
