Geographic Information Systems, Technology & Engineer Fellow (Fall) | Metropolitan Transportation Authority

The Tone:
This is an onsite internship at Metropolitan Transportation Authority, located in Jamaica, NY. The MTA IT department manages a central Geographic Information System (GIS) team, which utilizes specialized software, data, and hardware to manage vital infrastructure, plan future projects, and enhance safety across the transit system. This role is crucial as the fellow will contribute to spatial analysis, cartography, and data management, directly supporting the MTA’s operational efficiency, transit planning, and emergency response capabilities through critical GIS functions.

• Mission: Responsible for spatial analysis, cartography, and data management within ArcGIS Pro to support MTA’s infrastructure, planning, and operations.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Perform spatial analysis, cartography, and comprehensive data management specifically within ArcGIS Pro.
• Create, edit, and meticulously maintain geospatial data layers, preparing and publishing them as web layers to ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise for wider accessibility.
• Develop new web maps and implement Python scripting to automate and enhance various GIS tasks and workflows.
• Actively monitor the ArcGIS environment and collaborate with ESRI to troubleshoot issues and support ongoing development efforts.
• Assist in critical content promotion, develop and implement GIS governance documentation, and contribute to ongoing projects such as Weather Emergency management and GIS GeoAnalytics.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Undergraduate student in good standing with at least a 2.5 GPA, currently pursuing a major in Computer Science, Geographic Information Systems, or a related field.
• Experience: Authorized to work in the United States and able to commit to a minimum of 12 months in the role.
• Skills: Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online/Enterprise, and Python scripting; strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and maintain a keen eye for detail while working independently and as part of a team.
