Business Planning, Emerging Talent Intern | Metropolitan Transportation Authority

The Tone:
This is an internship at Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), located in New York, NY. The MTA is a vital public organization responsible for the transportation network serving millions in the New York metropolitan area. This role is crucial for supporting the Strategic Planning – Procurement department’s financial oversight and workforce planning, ensuring efficient operations and compliance within a large-scale public service entity. The intern’s contributions will directly impact the effectiveness of procurement processes and personnel management.

What You’ll Actually Do
Expense Data Management: Collect and meticulously organize monthly expense data to provide foundational support for comprehensive financial analysis and accurate budget reporting.
Budget Analysis & Variance Reporting: Conduct detailed budget analysis, diligently identifying and flagging any discrepancies in salary, wages, and Other Than Personnel Services (OTPS) for prompt review by Procurement leadership and the Office of Management and Budget.
Human Resources Coordination: Serve as a key liaison with MTA People (Human Resources) to efficiently process HR action forms, manage onboarding documentation, facilitate recruitment updates, and coordinate various personnel actions.
Financial Reporting Support: Play a crucial role in assisting with the preparation of complex monthly budget reports that effectively summarize and clearly explain variances in salary, wage, and non-labor accounts to key stakeholders.
Operational Support & Compliance: Monitor ePerformance completion statuses, draft essential internal reminders and communications to ensure adherence to deadlines and compliance, and meticulously review and update organization charts to reflect current titles and reporting structures.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently matriculated in an undergraduate program with a minimum 2.5 GPA, or a graduate program with a minimum 2.8 GPA. Preferred major areas include Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field, preparing candidates for strategic business planning functions.
• Experience: Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly for data organization, analysis, and report generation.
• Skills: Possess strong organizational capabilities, analytical acumen, and effective communication skills to articulate findings clearly. Must be able to manage tasks efficiently under pressure, prioritize effectively, and exhibit a keen eye for detail while working both independently and as a collaborative team player.
