Job Description (Detailed)
This posting is for a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) Intern position with Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital (VVWH) and the Brandon NICU. It is designed as an educational program for Registered Nurses who have already graduated from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a Neonatal Specialty, preparing them for a full NNP role.
Core Purpose: The program aims to provide a valuable career opportunity by teaching a wide range of skills and knowledge, enabling the intern to transition into a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. Key goals include delivering high-quality patient and family-centered care, facilitating multidisciplinary communication, increasing educational opportunities for house staff and medical students, and innovating newborn care within the Children’s and Women’s Hospital.
Work Locations:
• Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital (VVWH) 9 East and 9 West Birthing Center
• Brandon NICU on 8 West and the expansion unit (10 West)
• The primary work location is C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
Key Responsibilities (under direct supervision of a licensed NNP):
• Coordinating care for acutely ill neonates in intensive and acute care settings.
• Presenting pertinent patient data to medical staff.
• Collecting and interpreting reports from diagnostic lab tests, radiographic procedures, and clinical studies.
• Conferring with attending physicians and communicating with other care providers/consultants to coordinate clinical care.
• Streamlining patient transfer processes between different levels of care.
• Attending high-risk deliveries and assisting with neonatal resuscitation activities.
• Once credentialed and privileged as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, the individual will perform procedures and order entry independently.
Commitment and Expectations:
• The NNP internship requires a two-year commitment to practice as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner in the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit, with a full-time equivalent (0.9-1.0 FTE) appointment fraction, following the completion of orientation.
Required Qualifications:
• Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
• Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with a Neonatal Specialty.
• A complete and accurate resume is required.
Desired Qualifications:
• Demonstrated excellent verbal communication skills.
• Ability to function effectively under direct NNP supervision while ensuring smooth and collaborative functioning of the medical care team.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate clinical care ideas across multiple patient care services and advocate for patients.
• Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of current medical, surgical, and pharmaceutical treatment modalities for acute and chronically ill neonates.
Work Schedule:
• Hours: 40 per week.
• Shift: Day shift, including weekend shifts as required by the service.
• Location: C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
• New employees are expected to float to designated unit(s) during low census periods, based on the collective bargaining agreement.
