The Tone:
This is a Fall 2026 part-time internship at the University of Massachusetts, primarily located in Westborough, MA within a hybrid work environment. The University of Massachusetts is a public university system dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality education and fostering groundbreaking research across its campuses. This role is integral to supporting the Office of the President’s Internal Audit division, which plays a critical role in ensuring the university’s operations, compliance practices, and internal control systems are effectively evaluated and maintained. The intern will gain valuable foundational experience in public service and internal audit methodologies, contributing directly to the integrity and efficiency of a large public institution and learning to communicate complicated ideas clearly.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Part-time (20 hours per week)
• Location: Hybrid – Westborough, MA
• Pay: $17 hourly
• Team: Internal Audit (IA) team, under the guidance of Internal Audit Management and Senior Auditors
• Mission: Evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of the University’s operations, ensure compliance with policy and regulations, and strengthen systems of internal control.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

What You’ll Actually Do
• Support: Provide general administrative assistance and operational support to the Internal Audit team.
• Research: Assist in conducting thorough audit research and performing tests of internal controls and compliance with policies.
• Engage: Interact professionally with various university administrators, faculty, and staff across departments.
• Document: Organize, maintain, and manage audit workpapers meticulously.
• Monitor: Follow up on management’s action plans and outstanding items as directed by senior staff.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Current UMass student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program of study, such as accounting, business administration, or IT. Candidates must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate a genuine interest in higher education, internal audit, operations, compliance, or information technology.
• Experience: Entry-level familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, coupled with comfort in adapting to new technology platforms.
• Skills: Strong critical thinking and professional skepticism, excellent verbal and written communication skills, proven analytical skills, strong organizational and detail-orientation, and a friendly, professional demeanor with strong interpersonal skills.
• Bonus: Ability to travel occasionally to all five UMass campuses; academic credit may also be available.
