CONSTRUCTION WORKER I | Inside Higher Ed
The Tone:
This is a full-time role at the University of Georgia, located in Athens, GA. The University, chartered in 1785, is the birthplace of public higher education in America and the state’s flagship institution, currently ranked among the top 20 public universities. This position is within the Facilities Management Division, a team of over 800 personnel responsible for managing, operating, and maintaining campus landscapes, buildings, and infrastructure. This role is crucial for supporting skilled tradesmen in essential construction and maintenance activities that ensure the long-term sustainability and safety of the university environment.

• Team: This role is part of the FMD-Grounds-Construction Department and reports to a foreman.
• Mission: This person supports skilled tradesmen in daily construction and maintenance activities to ensure the safety and functionality of the university campus.
• Tech Stack: cutoff saws, jackhammers, tamps, drills, compressors, compactors
What You’ll Actually Do
• Concrete Support: Assist concrete masons in the forming and placement of concrete for sidewalks, curb cuts, curbing, footers, and aprons.
• Earthmoving Assistance: Support construction operators with earthmoving activities related to utilities, including spotting, rough/fine grading, excavation/backfilling, and tamping.
• Gradient Establishment: Assist concrete masons and construction operators in establishing earthwork gradients for asphalt and concrete placement.
• Equipment Operation: Operate various construction equipment such as compressors, jackhammers, compactors, and saws, in addition to hand tools.
• Emergency Response: Perform traffic control measures for road and utility projects, and respond to grounds emergencies, including inclement weather, to maintain campus safety.

• Background: Others. High school diploma or equivalent, with a foundational understanding of basic construction practices and safety.
• Experience: Experience performing manual labor in support of construction activities and operating small machinery.
• Skills: Knowledge of basic construction practices/techniques, concrete forming/placement, grading, job site safety, operation of small machinery, manual labor.
