Damage Prevention Specialist Associate | American Electric Power

The Tone:
This is a full-time, on-site role at American Electric Power, located in Gahanna, Ohio. AEP is an energy company committed to delivering safe, reliable, and innovative energy solutions, guided by a mission to prioritize customer needs. This position plays a critical part in protecting underground facilities by meticulously managing the high volume of 811 locate requests, thereby contributing directly to the safety and reliability of our services. The work involves reviewing approximately 1.6 million electronic facilities locate requests annually, ensuring operational efficiency and preventing potential damage.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Review: Electronically process locate ticket requests with accuracy and consistency.
• Interpret: Comprehend and interpret symbology on AEP’s GIS Distribution Map, distinguishing various colors to assess locate needs.
• Navigate: Follow complex mapping directions to accurately determine areas of concern.
• Maintain: Sustain focus on a continuous ticketing workflow while upholding high quality and proportional quantity of work.
• Support: Provide minimal customer service to excavators, escalating more complex issues to appropriate personnel.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. High school diploma or GED. Basic understanding of underground damage prevention laws.
• Experience: Minimum of six months post-high school experience applying administrative office procedures, practices, and equipment. For the Damage Prevention Specialist level, two years of experience specifically in damage prevention is required.
• Skills: Analytical and problem-solving abilities; effective communication skills; ability to work independently in a focused environment; capacity to comprehend and interpret symbology on GIS Distribution Maps and distinguish colors.
• Bonus: Familiarity with AEP’s Ticket Management System; knowledge of AEP’s GIS Mapping.
