FWSP Clerical (Off-Campus) – YWCA DVVAP | Inside Higher Ed
The Tone:
This is an off-campus Federal Work Study Program (FWSP) student clerical position, serving as an intern primarily at the Oklahoma County Courthouse. You will be supporting the Domestic Violence Victim Assistant Program (DVVAP) within the YWCA, a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women. This role is crucial for providing direct client contact and advocacy to victims of domestic violence, offering vital assistance and support during challenging times.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Client Support: Provide direct client contact and court advocacy for individuals seeking Victims Protective Orders (VPO’s).
• Information Sharing: Offer information regarding VPO’s, the court process for VPO hearings, and available community resources.
• Training & Education: Receive comprehensive education on filing for VPO’s, different VPO types, court procedures, and safety planning.
• Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality for all clients and sensitive issues related to domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and harassment.
• Guidance: Provide support and information on YWCA services and other OKC community services to clients.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled as a student at UCO, meeting specific Federal Work Study Program (FWSP) enrollment requirements: minimum 6 credit hours for undergraduates (5 for graduates) during Fall/Spring/Summer semesters.
• Experience: Awarded Federal Work Study through the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships. Completion of two weeks of observation and shadowing in the courtroom is required before beginning direct communication with clients, with initial supervision.
• Skills: Strong oral and written communication, sensitivity to issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and harassment, organizational skills, ability to multitask, team player, good interpersonal skills, initiative, detail-oriented, dependable, and thorough.
