Job Description: Vet Tech Student Extern
This opportunity is for a Vet Tech Student Extern, specifically designed for veterinary technician students currently enrolled in an AVMA accredited Vet Tech program.
Overview of the Role:
The Veterinary Technician Extern will provide support to the hospital’s clinical operations. This involves actively assisting with patient care, performing routine technical tasks, and observing advanced medical procedures under direct supervision. The role emphasizes direct interaction with the veterinary team, contributing to the diagnostic and treatment processes, and gaining invaluable practical experience within a professional veterinary setting.
Key Responsibilities:
• Clinical Assistance: Directly assist credentialed veterinary technicians and veterinarians with a wide range of clinical procedures.
• Patient Care: Observe and actively participate in the care and management of diverse medical cases.
• Operational Support: Contribute to daily clinical operations, which includes patient intake, treatment administration, and discharge procedures.
• Team Collaboration: Work effectively with various veterinary team members, including veterinary assistants, hospital managers, and specialists.
• Protocol Adherence: Strictly follow all established clinical protocols and safety procedures within the veterinary environment.
• Learning & Development: Engage in mentorship and training sessions designed to enhance clinical knowledge and practical skills.
• Task Completion: Successfully complete all assigned tasks and responsibilities as directed by the supervising technician or hospital manager.
• Program Improvement: Provide constructive feedback through a post-externship survey to aid in the continuous improvement of the externship program.
• General Duties: Perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the nature and level of the externship.
Qualifications:
• Academic Enrollment: Must be currently enrolled in an AVMA CVTEA-accredited Veterinary Technician/Nursing program.
• Externship Eligibility: Must be eligible to participate in an externship as a formal requirement of their academic program.
• Communication Skills: Possess strong communication abilities to interact effectively with team members and clients.
• Teamwork Skills: Demonstrate excellent teamwork capabilities, contributing positively to a collaborative environment.
• Adaptability: Exhibit a strong willingness to learn new skills and adapt quickly to the dynamic nature of a fast-paced clinical environment.
Physical Requirements:
The role demands certain physical capabilities, including the ability to stand for extended periods. Externs must be capable of lifting and restraining animals of various sizes. Manual dexterity is essential for handling instruments and performing precise clinical tasks. The role requires working in a clinical environment, which involves potential exposure to animals, common allergens, and various cleaning agents.
