The Tone:
This is a temporary, full-time internship at the Georgia Archives, located in Morrow, just south of Atlanta. The Georgia Archives identifies, collects, provides access to, and preserves historical documents for the citizens of Georgia. This role is crucial for aspiring conservation professionals, offering hands-on experience and skills development essential for applying to postgraduate conservation programs.

The TL;DR

• Location: Morrow, GA (On-site)
• Pay: $12 hourly ($960 bi-weekly stipend)
• Team: Interns work under the supervision of the Archives conservator.
• Mission: To gain skills and experience in preservation and treatment of paper-based archival materials to prepare for postgraduate conservation programs.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Treatment: Conduct supervised conservation treatment of Georgia Archives materials.
• Documentation: Evaluate and document archival materials to inform preservation strategies.
• Digitization: Prepare and stabilize materials to facilitate digitization efforts.
• Preservation: Treat and house rare library and archival materials with various condition concerns.
• Support: Contribute to environmental monitoring and exhibit preparation projects.

The Must-Haves
• Background: A Bachelor’s degree in conservation, art history, library science, engineering, or an equivalent field. Candidates must be working towards a postgraduate degree in conservation.
• Experience: Demonstrated good manual dexterity, strong hand-skills, and good color perception.
• Skills: Excellent attention to detail, good oral and written communication skills, and proficiency in Microsoft programs.
• Bonus: Academic studies in chemistry and physics, alongside problem-solving, creative thinking, communication, and organizational skills.
