Underwriting Trainee | Auto-Owners Insurance

The Tone:
This is a full-time, hybrid role at Auto-Owners Insurance. This role is fundamental to that mission, focusing on the critical initial stages of applying insurance coverage and making sound underwriting decisions that uphold the company’s philosophy.

• Mission: To execute the underwriting decision-making process according to Company underwriting philosophy by applying insurance coverage, rules, and guidelines.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Learn: Master various insurance coverages, contracts, company philosophy, and procedures to inform underwriting decisions.
• Interpret: Understand and apply the meaning and use of documents such as policies, manuals, forms, and endorsements.
• Analyze: Evaluate loss experience, financial conditions, and physical characteristics of risks to form opinions and express decisions.
• Communicate: Interact effectively with independent agents and internal associates through both verbal and written communication.
• Develop: Acquire a strong working knowledge of supporting sections within the underwriting department and successfully complete the company’s underwriter training program.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree or direct equivalent experience with property/casualty underwriting. Ability to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship is required.
• Experience: Direct equivalent experience in property/casualty underwriting is essential, alongside a capacity for independent decision-making.
• Skills: Strong organizational skills for data, ability to multi-task, above average written and verbal communication, and the capacity to write reports, compose correspondence, and resolve complex issues.
• Bonus: Commitment to continually developing product knowledge through participation in approved educational programs.
