This is a student assistant role at the NYS Department of Transportation, located in Region 4, NY. • Mission: To support vehicle maintenance, diagnostics, parts management, and administrative tasks, ensuring the operational readiness of the department’s fleet and contributing to emergency response capabilities.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Observation: Observe the performance of vehicle diagnostics and various mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs on vehicles and equipment.
• Maintenance Assistance: Assist with routine vehicle maintenance tasks such as brake jobs, oil changes, and other minor repair work.
• Work Order Processing: Be instructed on opening work orders and accurately documenting all performed work.
• Parts Management: Research and order necessary parts, and go out on parts deliveries, if assigned to a parts room.
• Emergency Response: Potentially serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Student currently enrolled in an automotive or diesel repair technology program.
• Experience: No specific prior work experience is required beyond current enrollment in a relevant academic program.
• Skills: Ability to observe complex mechanical processes, willingness to assist with routine maintenance, aptitude for administrative tasks like documentation, and capability to research and manage parts.
• Other: Must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without employer sponsorship.
