Staff Accountant – Accounting Operations | Farmer Mac

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at Farmer Mac, located in Washington, DC. Farmer Mac is a financial institution that supports American agriculture and rural infrastructure by providing liquidity and stability to financial markets. This Staff Accountant role is critical for ensuring the accuracy and compliance of daily financial activities, maintaining robust accounting records, and supporting the timely generation of financial reports. This position contributes to the foundational integrity of financial information used across the organization and for external reporting.

• Team: Reports to the Senior Manager, Accounting Operations and works with the Accounting and Financial Reporting teams.
• Mission: This role ensures the accuracy and compliance of financial records and supports essential financial reporting activities.
• Tech Stack: Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Visio

What You’ll Actually Do
• Prepare: Journal entries for a variety of transactions including loans, investments, debt, and derivatives in accordance with accounting policies.
• Reconcile: Subledgers with related general ledger accounts, investigating and resolving all reconciling items to ensure accuracy.
• Support: The financial close process by meeting established deadlines and maintaining proper documentation for all transactions.
• Prepare: Quarterly and annual reports and disclosures to assist the Financial Reporting team with SEC filings (Forms 10-Q/10-K).
• Aid: Internal and external audit requests by preparing necessary schedules, reconciliations, and comprehensive supporting documentation.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required. Early-level career with a strong understanding of accounting principles and financial statements.
• Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience in public or private accounting, internal audit, and/or internal control assessments.
• Skills: Excellent analytical skills for assessing detailed fluctuations in accounts, strong computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, and Visio, and demonstrated attention to detail with a focus on accuracy.
• Bonus: Registered as, or working towards, a Certified Public Accountant. Experience in the financial services industry is preferred.
