Job Description, Detailed
This is an internship position designed to provide broad training experience across several operational and administrative areas of the YMCA. Interns will gain exposure to the realities of an entry-level position, experiencing both its rewards and rigors.
Specific training processes may include:
• Program development and research
• League administration
• Marketing and advertising
• Volunteer recruitment
• Coach methodology and techniques
• Sports officiating
• Inventory control
• Purchasing
• Facility operations

Essential Functions:
• Role Modeling: Serve as a role model to members and Y staff, embodying the YMCA mission, vision, and values.
• Program Assistance: Assist the Youth Sports Director with the planning, implementation, and supervision of sports programs, including those on nights and weekends.
• Marketing & Promotion: Implement techniques to promote interest and participation in sports through active marketing plans, public relations, and informational exchange.
• Brand Development: Collaborate with the Youth Sports Director to develop a plan to strengthen the sports brand within the community.
• Operations & Logistics: Assist with inventory control of sports equipment and facilitate facility set-up and breakdown.
• Staff Management Exposure: Work with the Youth Sports Director to understand basic staff management and supervision.
• Volunteer Management: Assist with volunteer coach recruitment efforts and work with the Youth Sports Director to develop and implement an ongoing training program for volunteer coaches.
• Meeting Support: Assist the Youth Sports Director with parent and coach meetings.
• Safety & Environment: Maintain a safe and encouraging environment during practices and games.
• On-Call Support: Be prepared to substitute as a sports referee or coach if a need arises.
• Program Research & Development: Research and establish 1-2 new activities that the YMCA of the Iowa Mississippi Valley could implement, including analyzing their facility impact, staff impact, and fiscal impact, along with a full program budget.
• Safety Adherence: Understand and follow all safety rules and regulations of the YMCA, including knowledge of emergency procedures and equipment locations.
• Punctuality: Ensure regular and timely adherence to assigned schedules and meetings.
Education And Experience Requirements:
• Minimum of 30 credit hours in fields such as Leisure Studies, Sports Management, Athletic Management, Sport Coaching, or Education.
• Strong organization and communication skills.
• Motivated, with the ability to be self-directed while also working collaboratively.
• Strong background from participating, planning, or working within a sports environment.
• Previous experience working with youth and adults.
• Experience and ability to work with and understand the needs of a diverse population.
Certifications And Other Qualifications:
• Must be able to pass a background check.
Physical Demands:
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to run to keep up with the pace of the game/play.
• Ability to stand and walk for at least several hours at a time.
• Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
• Ability to reach with hands and arms.
• Ability to talk and hear regularly.
• Ability to stoop and kneel occasionally.
Work Environment:
• Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles.
• Noise level can vary from quiet to loud, depending on events and hours.
• Work occurs in a variety of environments, including gymnasiums and outdoors playing fields.
