About the Global Payment Team

The Global Payment team at ByteDance is dedicated to providing comprehensive payment solutions for ByteDance platforms, including TikTok. Our mission is to ensure a smooth and secure payment experience for our users by managing the entire payment lifecycle. This includes critical functions such as payment acquisitions, disbursements, transaction monitoring, payment method management, foreign exchange conversion, accounting, and reconciliations.

Internship Overview

We are seeking talented individuals for an exciting Software Engineer Internship starting from May 2026 onwards. Internships at ByteDance are designed to offer students invaluable industry exposure and significant hands-on experience, transforming your ambitions into reality through innovative opportunities.

Successful candidates must be able to commit to a full-time work period from May to September, 2026.

Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer Intern on the Global Payment Team, you will:

• Combine your domain knowledge of the payment business with system architecture design capabilities to iteratively upgrade the global payment system architecture.
• Develop disaster tolerance and degradation strategies for various basic system components to ensure the stability of system services.
• Build cross-region disaster tolerance capabilities for the global payment system, guaranteeing system resilience against data center-level failures while upholding data security and compliance.
• Sort out business processes and dependencies, identifying potential system bottlenecks within the payment infrastructure.
• Introduce new technologies and solutions to the team, aligning with actual business needs.
• Leverage excellent project management, coordination, and communication skills to lead and promote key cross-team projects.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Currently pursuing an Undergraduate/Graduate/Master’s degree.
• Demonstrated software development experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages, such as Java, Go, C++, C#, or Python.
• Excellent proficiency in backend server development and proven expertise in relational databases.
• Possess strong analytical thinking and exceptional attention to detail.
• Must be able to commit to a 12-week full-time work period during Summer or Fall 2026.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Relevant internship experience with hands-on exposure to a diverse tech stack.
• A basic understanding of the payment industry and familiarity with risk vendors.
• Graduating December 2025 onwards, with the explicit intent to return to a degree program after the completion of the internship.

Compensation & Benefits

For Pay Transparency (Hourly) – Campus Intern

The hourly rate range for this position in the selected city is $45 – $60.

Benefits may vary based on employment nature and work location. Interns receive day one access to health insurance, life insurance, wellbeing benefits, and more. Interns are also granted 10 paid holidays per year and paid sick time (56 hours if hired in the first half of the year, 40 if hired in the second half). Interns not working 100% remotely may also be eligible for a housing allowance.
