Process Engineering Intern

Job Summary

The Process Engineering Intern role supports refinery initiatives with a heavy focus on the design, optimization, and operation of complex chemical processes. A significant portion of this position will be performed in the field, exposing the employee to moving mechanical parts, working at heights, and outside weather conditions. Physical activities include climbing, standing, crawling, confined space entry, and maneuvering through operating process units. Appropriate personal protective equipment will be worn as required in the refinery.

This position also involves documenting detailed reports on findings and participating in various committees. Interns will learn how to track, monitor, and justify projects, gaining sound training experience.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly working environment by complying with safety procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Troubleshoot equipment, determine root cause, and take corrective action to resolve system failures.
  • Participate in technical investigations, design, and analysis of equipment performance to identify deficiencies, obsolescence, and potential for benefits and improvements, collaborating with experienced engineers.
  • Develop, select, and test equipment and components to evaluate and select best-in-class technology systems.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and fellow engineers on equipment problem-solving through root cause analysis, troubleshooting, and effective solutions to prevent recurring issues.
  • Oversee mechanical and/or instrumentation equipment to generate critical equipment lists, update P&ID’s, and equipment specifications.
  • Plan, design, and write specifications for process equipment.
  • Successfully work independently and as a member of a cross-functional team, continuously improving supply chain performance and customer satisfaction.
  • Create and prepare reports, type documents, and files.
  • Execute Process Simulation.
  • Perform Process Monitoring & Control.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.00.
  • Availability to work at least 40 hours a week.
  • Basic knowledge of industrial equipment.
  • Familiarity with SDS and safety protocols in a mechanical environment.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal or no supervision.
  • Ability to record and present data in a clear and concise manner.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid software application skills, including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness and desire for continual learning and self-development.
