Pension Finance & Data Integrity, Emerging Talent Intern (Fall) | Metropolitan Transportation Authority

The Tone:
This is an internship at Metropolitan Transportation Authority, located onsite in New York, NY. The MTA is a major public transportation authority, and this role specifically supports the MaBSTOA Pension Administration department. You will be contributing to the financial operations and data integrity of the MaBSTOA Pension Plan, which is critical for ensuring accurate participant contribution records. This position plays an important part in maintaining the financial health and historical accuracy of pension data.

• Mission: To support the accuracy and integrity of MaBSTOA Pension Plan participant contribution records through data management and financial operations assistance.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Document Organization: Systematically locate, review, and organize a wide range of historical pension records, including legacy reports, payment vouchers, and tax documents, to ensure comprehensive data availability for audit readiness.
• Digitization & Indexing: Digitize physical and legacy documents, converting them into standardized PDF formats, and accurately index participant-specific records into Oracle UCM with appropriate metadata like employee ID and document type for efficient long-term storage and retrieval.
• Data Analysis & Research: Conduct research into participant account activity by thoroughly reviewing historical records to identify contribution refunds, current account balances, and significant financial events, as well as analyzing legacy pension reports for patterns in reporting cycles or prior refund activity.
• Data Conversion & Calculation Support: Assist in converting complex legacy payroll and contribution data into usable formats and directly support the preparation of interest calculations for Additional Member Contributions (AMC), including the potential development of templates or tools to standardize this process.
• Process Improvement: Actively contribute to efforts aimed at improving departmental processes, focusing on enhancing document management protocols, improving data accessibility, and streamlining overall workflow efficiency for pension record-keeping.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least a 2.5 GPA, pursuing a degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Data Analytics, Public Administration, or a related field.
• Experience: No specific years of experience required beyond academic standing; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is essential.
• Skills: Possess strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills, with a keen eye for detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work both independently and as an active team player under pressure while prioritizing tasks effectively.
• Bonus: A demonstrated interest in financial systems, data management, or public sector operations, along with the ability to review and interpret data across multiple sources.
