Part-Time Counselor, Accommodations and Support Center – Student Services | Modesto Junior College

The Tone:
This is a part-time role at Modesto Junior College, located in Modesto, CA. The college provides higher education opportunities and comprehensive student services to its diverse community. This role is crucial for fostering student success and equity by providing specialized counseling and support services to students with disabilities and veterans through the Accommodations & Support Services (ASC) department. The counselor helps students achieve their academic, career, and personal goals by navigating college resources and ensuring appropriate accommodations.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Counseling: Provide personalized academic, career, and personal counseling (face-to-face and/or remote) for students primarily in the ASC and Veterans populations.
• Documentation: Determine disability verification through observation and analysis of medical and psychological documentation.
• Advising: Keep students informed on current degree, certificate, transfer, and ASC requirements, as well as college and community resources.
• Reporting: Maintain and submit accurate records, including ASC mandated reports focusing on Title 5 and other regulations, according to published deadlines.
• Workshops: Lead group presentations including student-interest workshops, orientations, and group advising sessions.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Master’s degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR Bachelor’s degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling with a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).
• Experience: Completion of 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate-level coursework related to people with disabilities; OR completion of six semester units, or the equivalent, of a graduate-level counseling practicum or field work in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or a program dealing with people with disabilities; OR two years of full-time equivalent experience counseling for students with disabilities or in public/private agencies where responsibilities are for persons with disabilities.
• Skills: Knowledge of and ability to appraise diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students; Sensitivity to the needs and challenges of diverse student populations; Ability to interpret IEPs, medical, psychological, and rehabilitation reports; Knowledge of state and federal guidelines regarding academic accommodations (ADA, Section 504); Proficiency in word processing, data collection, and spreadsheet software.
• Bonus: Experience in community college-based grant-funded or categorical programs; At least two years of counseling experience (full-time or equivalent) at a higher education institution within the last six years; Demonstrated ability to teach counseling courses and facilitate workshops; Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
