Position Summary

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will play a crucial role in assisting the engineering team across all stages of the product lifecycle. This includes supporting the design, development, production, testing, operation, and maintenance of mechanical equipment, essential tools, and industrial machinery. A key aspect of this role is ensuring all activities adhere to stringent NQA-1 requirements, a testament to our commitment to quality and safety. You will also provide direct assistance to the Engineering Manager on various projects, contributing to the successful production of PSC products and helping to maintain operational excellence.

Job Description

Essential Job Functions:

Design & Development Support:

  • Project Review and Analysis: Actively review project drawings and instructions to understand comprehensive test specifications, procedures, and objectives. Analyze technical problems and contribute to identifying possible solutions, which may include recommending part redesigns, material substitutions, or efficient rearrangement of parts and subassemblies.
  • CAD Design and Drafting: Utilize advanced CAD software, such as SOLIDWORKS, to design and draft detailed engineering drawings. This involves creating precise models and technical documentation essential for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Prototype Fabrication: Engage in hands-on fabrication of modified prototype components, transforming designs into tangible test articles for evaluation and refinement.

Product & Project Support:

  • Ongoing Technical Assistance: Provide continuous technical support on various projects to PSC Engineers, operating under the direct guidance of the Engineering Manager and in close partnership with the PSC Site Leader.
  • Managerial Assistance: Support the Engineering Manager with critical project assignments, resource allocation, decision-making processes, and administrative needs as requested, ensuring smooth project execution.
  • Procurement & Logistics Coordination: Collaborate closely with the Procurement and Facilities departments to streamline the purchasing of materials and the scheduling of both common and specially procured parts, ensuring an efficient and uninterrupted workflow.
  • Source Inspections: Assist in facilitating and supporting source inspections alongside the Engineering Manager, fellow Engineers, and Customers, ensuring product compliance and quality from the outset.

Technical Operations & Quality Assurance:

  • Equipment Development & Testing: Under the direction of experienced engineering staff, actively develop and test new equipment, applying your growing knowledge of mechanical and/or nuclear engineering technology.
  • Technical Input & Problem Solving: Contribute valuable input into project drawings and instructions. This includes identifying test specifications, procedures, objectives, and test equipment, and assisting in the analysis of technical problems to propose solutions such as part redesign, material substitution, or subassembly rearrangement, all under the guidance of the Engineering Manager.
  • Workflow Management: Take responsibility for ensuring that product parts and assemblies transition seamlessly from one manufacturing or assembly step to the next, minimizing delays and optimizing efficiency.
  • Milestone Achievement: Be accountable for achieving defined milestones related to manufacturing, assembly, and testing processes, contributing directly to project timelines.
  • Inter-Departmental Coordination: Coordinate manufacturing and testing activities effectively with other departments, fostering cross-functional collaboration.
  • Training Matrix Verification: Ensure appropriate personnel are tasked with the verification of training matrices, promoting a skilled and compliant workforce.
  • Issue Reporting & Resolution: Maintain clear communication with the project manager, promptly reporting any and all issues in a descriptive manner. Initiate the Non-Conformance Report (NCR) process when applicable to address and resolve deviations.
  • Part Care & Handling: Ensure the proper care and handling of all parts throughout the engineering and production process to prevent damage and maintain integrity.

Testing & Documentation:

  • Test Setup & Execution: Set up and conduct tests under operational conditions, meticulously investigating and analyzing results in relation to design specifications and test objectives.
  • Equipment Modification: Modify or adjust equipment as necessary to meet specific testing requirements or operational parameters.
  • Procedure Development & Documentation: Develop detailed test procedures, accurately record test results, and provide comprehensive document recommendations for future reference and process improvement.
  • Mechanical Operation: Operate mechanical test equipment and perform assembly of parts as needed during testing and development phases.
  • Other Duties: Perform all other duties as required to support the engineering department and achieve project goals.

Qualifications And Education Requirements:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Experience (Preferred): Two plus years of experience in project management or project support is preferable, demonstrating foundational organizational and coordination skills.
  • Relevant Studies (A Plus): Intermediate knowledge and/or current college coursework towards an electrical and/or nuclear engineering technology degree is a significant advantage.
  • CAD Proficiency (Preferred): Basic knowledge and practical experience with CAD software (e.g., SOLIDWORKS) is preferred.
  • Engineering Fundamentals (Preferred): Basic knowledge in mechanical and/or nuclear engineering technology is preferred.
