Lands Subsistence Projects Intern | NANA Regional Corporation

The Tone:
This is an internship at NANA Regional Corporation, located in Kotzebue, AK, with lodging and transportation provided for eligible applicants. NANA’s mission is to improve the quality of life of its shareholders, and this role directly contributes by supporting the Lands Department in advocating for subsistence and managing 2.2 million acres of land. The intern will learn NANA’s land management practices while upholding NANA’s core values of honesty, integrity, and respect, ensuring commitments are fulfilled and everyone is treated with dignity.

The TL;DR

• Team: Lands Department, supporting the Lands Specialist and Director of Lands
• Mission: Support NANA’s Lands Department in advocating for subsistence and managing lands on behalf of shareholders.
• Tech Stack: Geospatial Information Systems (GIS)

What You’ll Actually Do
• Presentation: Complete a presentation detailing the responsibilities of Alaska Native Corporations, including NANA, in managing lands obtained through the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.
• Mapping Support: Support the Lands Specialist by scanning key historical documents for the Subsistence Mapping Project.
• Program Support: Assist the Director of Lands in preparing for the launch of the Resource Protection Officer Season.
• Team Participation: Participate in weekly Lands staff meetings to collaborate and stay informed on departmental initiatives.
• Communication: Manage incoming and outgoing calls as needed to support ongoing projects and daily activities.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Applicants must be a shareholder of NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., or a direct descendant, be 18 years or older, and currently enrolled full-time in college or vocational school with at least one completed semester.
• Experience: Demonstrated good communication skills for effective interaction with local leaders.
• Skills: Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal skills, sound judgment, professionalism, customer service orientation, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Bonus: Work experience with grant programs, a valid Driver’s License, and being a Junior or Senior level college student are preferred.
