Financial Coordinator | Harris County

The Tone:
This is a full-time, regular role at Harris County, located in downtown Houston, Texas at 1111 Fannin Street. Harris County operates as a significant governmental organization, providing essential public services and managing vast county-wide operations. This Financial Coordinator position is crucial for ensuring the smooth day-to-day financial operations of a department, actively assisting with budget administration, financial reporting, and invoice processing. The role supports sound fiscal management by monitoring expenditures for compliance and maintaining accurate financial records, collaborating across various County departments to achieve these objectives.

• Mission: Coordinate and support the department’s day-to-day financial operations to maintain accurate financial records and support sound fiscal management.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Financial Operations Coordination: Coordinate the department’s daily financial activities, which includes meticulous budget tracking, ongoing expenditure monitoring, and comprehensive financial record maintenance.
• Budget Administration Support: Assist in preparing, monitoring, and maintaining departmental budgets throughout the fiscal year, working to prevent potential variances and support strategic allocation of funds.
• Invoice, Payment, and Procurement Processing: Review invoices, payment requests, and purchasing documents for accuracy, completeness, and strict compliance with County policies. This also involves coordinating purchase requisitions, purchase orders, contract payments, and other procurement-related financial documentation.
• Financial Reporting and Analysis: Prepare routine financial reports, detailed budget summaries, and insightful expenditure analyses for department management, aiding in informed decision-making and fiscal oversight.
• Reconciliation, Compliance, and Audit Support: Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reconciliations, ensure unwavering compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and County financial policies and procedures, and coordinate gathering documentation for internal and external audit requests.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Public Administration, or a related field.
• Experience: Two (2) years of experience in financial coordination, budgeting, accounting, purchasing, accounts payable, or related financial operations. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Skills: Knowledge of governmental accounting principles and financial procedures, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel), ability to analyze financial information and identify discrepancies, strong organizational, time management, and attention to detail skills, and excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
