Entry-Level Civil Engineer – Traffic Engineering, Planning, and Safety

Location: Auburn/Opelika, AL
Employment Type: Full-time

We are actively seeking an entry-level Civil Engineer to become a valuable member of our Traffic Engineering team, based in our Auburn/Opelika office. In this crucial role, you will collaborate with and support the project manager, contributing to the development of innovative solutions aimed at enhancing transportation systems for all users, including motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

About Our Traffic Engineering, Planning, and Safety Team

Our dedicated team of over fifteen skilled professionals is committed to advancing transportation safety. We passionately work on a diverse array of traffic engineering projects, encompassing:

  • Traffic signal design and retiming
  • Comprehensive traffic impact assessments
  • Transportation planning initiatives
  • Safety projects, such as the Safe Streets For All (SS4A) program

The core objective of these projects is to significantly enhance safety, improve overall mobility, and effectively reduce congestion within our communities.

A Glimpse into Your Day

On a typical day, your responsibilities might involve a dynamic mix of activities, including:

  • Conducting thorough road safety assessments to identify potential hazards and improvements.
  • Participating actively in public engagement activities, gathering valuable community feedback.
  • Performing detailed traffic observations to understand real-world traffic patterns and challenges.
  • Designing new traffic signals to optimize flow and safety.
  • Executing comprehensive traffic impact studies for proposed developments.
  • Developing and writing safety action plans for cities, outlining strategic transportation solutions.

Qualifications

Must Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
  • A genuine passion for Traffic Engineering and roadway safety.
  • Familiarity with traffic operations and conceptual geometric design principles.
  • Knowledge of key industry manuals, including the Access Management Manual, MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices), the Highway Safety Manual, and the Trip Generation Manual.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Engineer Intern (E.I.) certification is preferred.
  • Prior experience with traffic impact studies.
  • Involvement in a professional organization (e.g., ITE, ASCE).
  • Prefer software experience with MicroStation, OpenRoads, ArcGIS, and/or Synchro.
