Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Engineering Intern to join our Summer 2026 internship program in Wichita, KS. This dynamic role offers a balanced exposure across various engineering functions, specifically broken down as: 50% dedicated to document control and data analysis, 25% supporting project management initiatives, and 25% engaging in practical fieldwork.

This position presents a unique and invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a broad spectrum of engineering principles and best practices. Interns will acquire deep insights into the critical Environmental-Industrial Management industry and develop a foundational understanding of Process Safety Management (PSM) principles, crucial for ensuring operational safety and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical Integrity Program Support: Actively assist in the implementation, ongoing maintenance, and enhancement of the Mechanical Integrity Program, a cornerstone of process safety.
  • Corrosion Management: Delve into the study of various corrosion mechanisms, actively participating in essential corrosion monitoring activities and contributing to the development and execution of mitigation strategies to extend asset life.
  • Process Safety Management (PSM) Immersion: Gain comprehensive exposure and practical understanding of core Process Safety Management (PSM) principles. This includes hands-on involvement with critical processes such as:
    • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA): Understanding how to identify and evaluate potential hazards.
    • Management of Change (MOCs): Learning the structured approach to managing alterations in facilities, operations, or procedures.
    • Operating Procedures: Contributing to the development and review of safe and effective operational guidelines.
    • Incident Investigation: Participating in the analysis of incidents to prevent recurrence.
    • And various other integral elements of a robust PSM system.
  • Proactive Learning & Problem-Solving: Consistently demonstrate initiative and a proactive mindset towards acquiring new knowledge and effectively solving real-world engineering challenges.
  • Safety & Compliance: Strictly adhere to all established safety protocols and ensure unwavering compliance with industry standards and regulations, with particular emphasis on upholding the pillars of Process Safety Management (PSM) in all activities.

Qualifications:

To thrive in this role at Clean Harbors, candidates should possess:

  • Educational Background: Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s Engineering Program (specifically Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering) in your Junior or Senior year, or a recent graduate with a strong academic record.
  • Technical Software Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency in CAD or similar software for the effective updating and modification of engineering drawings.
  • Engineering Documentation (Preferred): A foundational knowledge of Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and piping isometric drawings (ISOs) is highly preferred.
  • Analytical & Problem-Solving: Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, coupled with an exceptional attention to detail in all tasks.
  • Initiative & Independence: Be a highly motivated and self-starting individual with the proven ability to work independently and manage tasks effectively.
  • Software Suite Proficiency: Proficient in the use of MS Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, for data analysis, reporting, and communication.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of interacting effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Physical Requirements: Must be physically capable of performing duties that include lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders, stooping, bending, standing for prolonged periods, working in various weather conditions, and performing tasks safely at heights.
