About the Job: Civil Engineering Industrial Placement Internship (10-12 Months)
The Opportunity:
Embark on a dynamic 10–12-month Industrial Placement Internship where you will collaborate with highly skilled professionals on real-life, meaningful projects from day one. This role offers the chance to add significant value to clients, explore challenges with curiosity and creativity, and build your professional network. You’ll benefit from regular learning sessions with our leadership team, opportunities for site visits to local projects, and a variety of social events designed to support your growth.
Our goal is to transition as many students as possible into our other programmes, including further internships or potential graduate positions. This placement is envisioned as a stepping-stone to your future career.

Our Civil Engineering teams are renowned for the wide-ranging nature of their work, integrating expertise across numerous disciplines. We engage in diverse projects including:
- Masterplanning and public realm enhancements.
- Sustainable Urban Drainage Solutions (SuDS).
- Earthworks, landscaping, and site development for buildings.
- Flooding and coastal risk management.
- Utility co-ordination, water and wastewater treatment, and infrastructure development.
- Data centre design, rail projects, and energy initiatives (including infrastructure upgrades and renewable energy schemes).
- Highway design.
Our teams contribute at every stage, from initial concept to construction, working with both public and private sector clients.

As an intern, you will gain exposure to a variety of roles, developing broad experience and specialised skills within the civil engineering sector. Typical positions our engineers take on include:
- River Engineer
- Coastal Engineer
- Sustainable Urban Drainage Engineer
- Highway Engineer

- Water and Wastewater Engineer

Client and Stakeholder Engagement:
You will work with a broad spectrum of clients, including:
- Government and transport organisations
- The Environment Agency
- Energy companies and developers
- Local authorities
- Contractors
- Water companies
- Private developers
You will also have opportunities to undertake site visits and surveys, meet with clients and stakeholders, and collaborate extensively both within and outside Arup.
Typical Day-to-Day Tasks May Include:
- Carrying out assessment, analysis, and design; preparing design reports, drawings, calculations, and specifications.
- Collaborating with Arup colleagues across various disciplines.
- Working with landscape architects, environmental specialists, and planners.
- Meeting with clients, local authorities, and other stakeholders, including site visits.
- Specifying and analysing survey information and constraints for solution development.
- Developing and appraising options, and supporting the production of engineering solutions and business cases.
- Undertaking sustainability reviews, producing low/zero carbon strategies, embodied carbon calculations, carbon implementation plans, materials assessments, sustainability-related studies, reporting, and design.
- Undertaking feasibility studies, preparing engineering sketches and technical reports.
- Creating digital solutions to manipulate, analyse, and report on large and complex datasets.
- Utilising specialist analysis and design software such as Infodrainage, GIS, AutoCAD/Civil 3D/Bentley MicroStation, ProjectWise, ACC, Navisworks, Infraworks, Plant3D, InfoWorks, Python, and Copilot.
