Job Description

The Certified Flight Intern (CFI) position at Big Bend Community College’s Aviation Program involves supporting the academic needs of students. These are part-time, temporary positions reporting to the Director of Flight Operations. CFIs may not be full-time BBCC students and are limited to enrolling in no more than 5 credits per quarter. The role is subject to specific WAC provisions, limiting work to 1050 hours in any twelve consecutive month period, and does not accrue time for service towards full-time faculty salary schedules or tenure. This is an ongoing recruitment with applications collected year-round, and positions filled as needs arise.

There are three levels of Certified Flight Interns, each with varying responsibilities, pay rates, and qualifications:

CFI Level I ($19.50/hr.):
Responsibilities: Pre and post flight briefings, assigned flight schedule, instructing students in stages 1-3, and assisting with other flight line activities.
Requirements: COMM ASEL (Commercial Pilot Certificate, Airplane Single-Engine Land) and CFI-ASE (Certified Flight Instructor – Airplane Single-Engine).
CFI Level II ($20.45/hr.):
Responsibilities: Pre and post flight briefings, assigned flight schedule, instructing students in stages 1-7, and assisting with other flight line activities.
Requirements: COMM ASEL, CFI-ASE, and CFI-IA (Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument Airplane).
CFI Level III ($23.52/hr.):
Responsibilities: Pre and post flight briefings, assigned flight schedule, instructing Stages 1-7, Instrument CFI and Multi as needed, and assisting with other flight line activities.
Requirements: COMM ASEL, CFI-ASE, CFI-IA, 4 quarters of CFI experience, and at least 400 hours in 141 teaching.

Primary Essential Duties and Responsibilities (applicable to all levels):

• Under the direction of the Director of Flight Operations and Chief Pilot, provide private, commercial, and instrument flight and ground instruction using the flight and ground training syllabus.
Maintain student records in accordance with FAA, TSA, VA, and college policies.
• Support the Director with day-to-day operations, including making copies, scanning documents, relaying messages, returning aircraft to service, and auditing student training folders.
• Meet with each student as scheduled, ensuring all flight lessons are completed according to training course outlines and all appropriate endorsements are made.
• Submit requests for stage checks upon completion of each stage of flight training, ensuring all lessons and flight books are completed beforehand.
• Ensure all training activities, flights, and briefings are conducted during normal business hours.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications for all Certified Flight Interns:

• Must possess a commercial pilot certificate, airplane single-engine land (ASEL) with instrument rating – airplane.
• Must also possess a current flight instructor certificate – airplane, single-engine and a current Medical Certificate with no restrictions that would prohibit performance of flight and non-flight duties.
• The internships require that the applicant has successfully completed Big Bend Community College’s Part 141 Flight School, commercial ASEL including instrument rating.

Conditions of Employment:

• Candidates previously employed by BBCC in a part-time hourly/temporary position after July 1, 2022, will not qualify.
• Temporary hourly positions are exempt from civil service rules and are limited to one appointment at BBCC, with a maximum of 12 consecutive months or 1050 hours from the original hire date or July 1, 2022.
• No contract or guarantee of continued employment.
• BBCC does not sponsor H-1B visas for this position; proof of authorization to work in the U.S. is required.
