The Internship Opportunity: 2026 Summer Internship, Scientific Machine Learning for Fluid Dynamics
RTRC invites individuals with expertise in scientific machine learning and a comprehensive understanding of computational fluid dynamics to apply for a 2026 Summer Internship position. We are looking for an intern to join a dedicated working group focused on developing advanced modeling capabilities for aero-thermal and high-speed flows.
The successful candidate will collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, encompassing expertise in aerodynamics, aerothermochemistry, computational fluid dynamics, measurement techniques, machine learning, and data-driven modeling. This role expects contributions to the delivery of novel modeling capabilities and innovative technologies through creative analysis and problem-solving. The intern should possess the ability to engage and collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment and communicate research results effectively through both verbal presentations and written publications.
What You Will Do:
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to develop advanced modeling capabilities for aero-thermal and high-speed flows using computational fluid dynamics, machine learning, and data-driven techniques.
- Conduct creative analyses and problem-solving to contribute to the delivery of innovative modeling technologies and solutions.
- Communicate research findings effectively through presentations and written publications to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications You Must Have:
- Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and the student must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in an applicable discipline.
- Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or granted refugee or asylee status) as defined by ecfr.gov link.
- Expertise in scientific machine learning applied to computational fluid dynamics.
- Experience with physics-informed machine learning, foundation models, and/or model discovery.
Qualifications We Prefer:
- Pursuing a Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in applied mathematics or aerospace engineering.
- Adaptability and the ability to thrive in a collaborative environment.
- Excellent communication skills, informal and formal presentation skills, and the ability to foster positive relationships with internal and external partners.
- Ability to manage uncertain requirements, develop approaches to solve problems, and recognize when additional subject matter expertise is needed.
Salary and Benefits
The salary range for this role is 37,000 USD – 82,000 USD. This range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Additionally, hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and collective-bargaining agreement coverage. Payments under these programs are not guaranteed and are contingent upon individual, business unit, and/or company performance.
This is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
