As North America’s largest transportation network, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) serves 15.3 million people across a 5,000-square-mile region encompassing New York City, Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. Through its six agencies, the MTA operates the nation’s largest bus fleet and more subway and commuter rail cars than all other U.S. transit systems combined. Facilitating approximately 2.6 billion annual trips, the MTA accounts for about one-third of the nation’s mass transit users and two-thirds of its commuter rail passengers, with its Bridges and Tunnels division handling more vehicle crossings than any other authority nationwide.
