Job Description: College Financial Representative Internship

This internship program at Northwestern Mutual offers guidance, connection, and a framework for building an integrated financial planning practice. College Financial Representatives, coming from various academic backgrounds, learn to build a financial planning practice with the support of local and national experts, exclusive financial products, and a Fortune 500 company. The internship aims to build confidence, develop a professional network, and enable students to help people achieve financial freedom.

Responsibilities:

• Learn prospecting and networking skills to build a business and client base.
• Develop and execute a business strategy.
• Contact potential clients and set meetings to understand their financial goals.
• Prepare financial plans and offer recommendations.
• Gain exposure to proprietary planning software platforms.
• Participate in weekly coaching, training, and development meetings.
• Obtain Risk Product State Licensing: Life, Accident, and Health.
• Build life skills that create future career opportunities.

The internship offers a flexible schedule to accommodate classes. It is a year-round program providing continuous growth and support for registrations and certifications like Series 6 & 63 or CFP®. There are opportunities to attend recognition events, access leadership programs, and collaborate with experts. Eligible students may have the chance to interview for a full-time Financial Representative or Advisor role after graduation.

Qualifications:

• Full-time student (juniors and seniors preferred).
• Entrepreneurial ambitions and interest in sales.
• Involvement on campus (leader, athlete, campus orgs, student government, etc).
• Excellent time-management skills.
• Interest in financial literacy and planning tools.
• Business savvy and desire to increase critical thinking abilities.

Compensation & Benefits:

• Performance-based earnings and revenue.
• Learning and Development Incentives (up to $1000/month, not inclusive of earned commissions).

• Support for SIE, Series 6, Series 63 registrations (eligibility required).

Note: College Financial Representatives are independent contractors, but “statutory employees” for Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) tax purposes. A national criminal background check is required for internship approval.
