Supervisory Accountant | United States Department of Defense

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at the United States Department of Defense. This position is part of the Defense Microelectronics Activity within the Acquisition Workforce Personnel Demonstration Project. The incumbent serves as the senior accounting advisor to the Comptroller, playing a critical role in ensuring the integrity and compliance of financial operations. This position is vital for maintaining robust financial reporting, strong internal controls, and audit readiness for the agency.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Advise Leadership: Serve as the senior accounting advisor to the Comptroller on all accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, audit readiness, and compliance matters.
• Direct Accounting Operations: Direct agency-wide accounting activities, ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial transactions and records.
• Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Oversee the recording, reconciliation, validation, and reporting of financial data in compliance with federal accounting standards, Department of Defense regulations, and Treasury requirements.
• Lead Audit and Internal Controls: Lead audit readiness efforts and serve as the primary liaison for auditors, inspectors, financial statement reviews, and internal control assessments.
• Supervise and Develop Team: Supervise a team of accountants and financial management professionals, assigning work, establishing priorities, evaluating performance, and providing coaching and mentorship.

The Must-Haves
• Background: A bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field such as business administration, finance, or public administration, including or supplemented by 24 semester hours in accounting (up to 6 hours of business law). Alternatively, four years of accounting experience or an equivalent combination of education and training, including 24 semester hours in accounting or auditing (up to 6 hours of business law), a CPA or Certified Internal Auditor certificate, or completion of requirements for a degree with substantial accounting coursework (15 semester hours) combined with full-performance accounting experience evaluated by professional accountants.
• Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the NH-03 or GS-13 level, including managing federal accounting operations, interpreting DoD financial management policies, reviewing complex accounting transactions, leading audit readiness initiatives, advising senior leadership on accounting and compliance, supervising personnel, and utilizing financial management systems.
• Skills: Expertise in federal accounting standards, DoD Financial Management Regulation (FMR), Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), USSGL requirements, appropriations law, fiscal statutes, internal controls, financial reporting, and audit readiness.
