Director, Portfolio Management Lead | Markel

• Pay: $158720–$218240 yearly
• Team: Portfolio Analytics team, with a dotted-line reporting relationship to Regional Presidents.
• Mission: To serve as a critical bridge between the Portfolio Analytics team and customers, driving strategic implementation of active portfolio management and delivering insights to optimize portfolio performance.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Strategy Implementation: Drive the strategic implementation of active portfolio management at the Regional & Product level across Markel US Wholesale & Specialty.
• Underwriting Enablement: Make appropriate recommendations and enhancements to ensure relevant stakeholders are equipped to actively manage their portfolios and drive remedial actions.
• Analytical Model Evaluation: Identify, scope, and evaluate the ROI of high‑impact analytical models and solutions, partnering with the team to build and prioritize an analytics project pipeline.
• Analytics Adoption: Drive underwriting engagement during the development, implementation, and adoption of strategic and predictive analytics to optimize portfolio performance.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with actuarial to ensure underwriting actions are quantified and understood in their reserving and pricing work.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Data Science, Economics, Mathematics, Information Systems, Risk Management or related field, with core domain knowledge in analytics, pricing, underwriting, or portfolio management within US Commercial/Specialty lines.
• Experience: 8–15+ years in analytics, pricing, underwriting, or portfolio management within US Commercial/Specialty lines, with leadership or multi-region experience valued.
• Skills: Advanced ability to manipulate and analyze large, complex datasets; strong understanding of actuarial principles; exceptional communication skills; and excellent understanding of insurance data, particularly Commercial and Specialty insurance in the US and Bermuda markets.
• Bonus: Advanced degree preferred; pricing actuarial experience at a Commercial or Specialty Insurer; experience working within a business unit or underwriting function; certifications such as ACAS/FCAS, CPCU, ASA, PMP/PMI-ACP.
