Investigative Reporter | KGTX 7 News
The Tone:
This is an educational intern role at KGTX 7 News, located in Galveston, TX. KGTX 7 News is an independent media outlet dedicated to serving all municipalities and unincorporated areas of Galveston County, focused on community-centered journalism. Team members contribute to a trusted regional news source by providing in-depth coverage of local issues, public affairs, and events that impact residents. This role helps uphold accurate reporting, public accountability, and diverse perspectives within the community.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Story Development: Research and develop in-depth stories on issues impacting Galveston County.
• Data & Records Gathering: Gather information from public records and various data sources.
• Interviewing & Verification: Conduct interviews, verify facts from multiple sources, and maintain high ethical standards.
• Production Assistance: Assist in the production of written and broadcast news segments suitable for television or digital video.
• Editorial Collaboration: Help identify story leads, contribute to newsroom meetings, and collaborate with editors and producers to refine story angles and scripts.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Educational intern with a foundational understanding of journalism principles.
• Experience: Demonstrated skills in Investigative Reporting and Computer-assisted Reporting to analyze documents, data, and public records. Basic experience or interest in Broadcasting, including preparing content for television or digital video.
• Skills: Strong reporting and writing skills for developing clear, accurate, and engaging news stories. Ability to conduct thorough research, verify information, and maintain high ethical standards. Effective communication and interviewing skills to engage diverse community members respectfully. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and capacity to meet deadlines. Familiarity with digital tools for research, data analysis, and content production; comfort working in a hybrid setting.
• Bonus: Current enrollment in or recent completion of a program in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, or a related field.
