Law Clerk | City of Chicago

The Tone:
This is a part-time position at the City of Chicago, located in Chicago, IL. The City of Chicago’s Department of Law provides comprehensive legal services for municipal government operations, working to uphold the city’s laws and protect its interests. This role is an ideal opportunity for licensed attorneys in Illinois or law students to gain practical experience in municipal litigation, prosecution, and administrative law, contributing directly to the enforcement of Chicago’s codes and collection of city debts. Your work will support the legal functions vital to the city’s daily operations and public safety initiatives.

The TL;DR
• Role: Law Clerk
• Type: Part-time (minimum of 20 hours per week/4-hour shift), Year-round
• Location: In-person, Chicago, IL (2 N. LaSalle St., 121 N. LaSalle St., 740 N Sedgwick)
• Pay: $17.05 hourly
• Team: Legal Information & Prosecutions (LIP) division
• Mission: Prepares legal cases for litigation, prosecutes violations of municipal and state codes, and conducts administrative reviews to uphold City ordinances and collect debts.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Research: Research questions of law and conduct factual investigations for assigned cases.
• Reporting: Summarize and present findings from legal research and factual investigations in written and oral reports.
• Discovery: Prepare and respond to discovery requests.
• Case Preparation: Assist attorneys in preparing legal cases for court or administrative hearings.
• Representation: Represent the City or its agents in various court systems, such as Circuit Court of Cook County or the Department of Administrative Hearings, and in labor relations proceedings, as required.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Completion of at least one semester in an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school is required.
• Experience: No specific years required. Must be eligible to practice pursuant to Supreme Court Rule 711 or be a licensed attorney in Illinois at the time of application for the Legal Information & Prosecutions (LIP) division.
• Skills: Legal research, factual investigation, written and oral reporting, discovery preparation, witness interviewing, legal case preparation for court or administrative hearings, and legal representation in court systems as required.
• Bonus: Possession of a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale or 3.5 or above on a 5.0 scale from an ABA accredited Law School. Possession of a 711 license.
