Student Assistant (Fleet) – Region 2 | NYS Department of Transportation

• Team: Reports to a Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment)
• Mission: To support the maintenance, repair, and operational efficiency of the department’s vehicle and equipment fleet.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Observe: Learn about vehicle diagnostics and various mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs on fleet vehicles and equipment.
• Assist: Support routine maintenance tasks, including brake jobs, oil changes, and other minor repair work.
• Document: Be instructed on creating work orders and accurately recording work performed.
• Manage Parts: Research and order necessary parts, and conduct parts deliveries for fleet operations.
• Shadow: Gain insight into Fleet Management operations through job shadowing opportunities with experienced staff.
• Support Emergencies: Fulfill a role within the Incident Command System to assist the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Student. Currently enrolled in an automotive or diesel repair technology program.
• Experience: No specific years of experience required.
• Skills: Basic automotive maintenance procedures, observational diagnostic assistance, parts research and procurement.
