The New York State Department of Transportation shapes statewide transportation policy and coordinates the development and operation of New York’s highways, railroads, mass transit, ports, waterways, and aviation facilities. It also formulates and updates a comprehensive master plan for balanced transportation growth. Furthermore, the Department administers public safety programs and regulates intrastate railroads and motor carriers, while providing safety oversight for publicly subsidized bus lines, commuter railroads, and subway systems.
