The Tone:

This critical position is responsible for delivering immediate, life-saving medical care and executing comprehensive fire suppression and rescue operations, directly impacting public safety and well-being. • Mission: Provide critical on-scene medical intervention and perform fire suppression and rescue operations to preserve life and protect property.
• Tech Stack: Emergency medical protocols, inter-venus needles, blood pressure cuffs, bandages, heavy water hoses, hydrants, pumps, ladders, ropes, breathing apparatus, jaws-of-life, floatation devices, hazardous materials containers, foams, wire cutters, hammers, pliers, oxygen tanks, emergency vehicles, ambulances, apparatus, boats, emergency communications devices.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Emergency Response: Respond to emergency medical and fire calls, activating communications, equipment, and protocols, and participating in mutual aid situations as required.
• Life-Saving Interventions: Provide critical on-scene medical intervention utilizing specialized protocols, equipment, and supplies to preserve life until patient transport and transfer to physician care.
• Fire & Rescue Operations: Perform fire suppression, extinguishment, emergency first aid, and rescue operations using specialized equipment and tools to save lives and protect property.
• Operational Readiness: Maintain continual availability and readiness of facilities, apparatus, equipment, and supplies, including testing, replenishing, cleaning, and restoring items after calls.
• Community & Training: Conduct non-emergency services such as inspections, investigations, recordkeeping, participate in fire prevention, disaster preparedness, public education programs, and continuous skills upgrading through drills and training.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry Level – graduation from high school or equivalent. Requires nationally registered paramedic certification for the examination process and Washington State Emergency Medical Service Paramedic certification prior to appointment.
• Experience: Not specified in years for entry-level, but requires foundational knowledge in emergency medical services, regional protocols, biology, chemistry, and algebra. Valid Washington State driver’s license and successful completion of Emergency Vehicle Accident Prevention training are required prior to appointment.
• Skills: Ability to quickly analyze conditions and act decisively during transit and at emergency scenes, safely operate fire and emergency equipment/vehicles, physically perform fire suppression and medical tasks in hazardous sites, and communicate effectively in English for emergency situations and written reports.
• Bonus: Regular City employees, qualified laid-off applicants from outside the City, and veterans are entitled to preference points added to their passing examination scores.
