Siemens Foundational Technology (FT) is the central R&D organization, dedicated to shaping the future of industrial technologies through advanced algorithms, optimization, and AI. This role is crucial for accelerating innovation across Siemens’ industry, infrastructure, mobility, and energy businesses by translating cutting-edge computational methods into practical, scalable industrial solutions, specifically by leveraging quantum-inspired ideas for classical algorithms.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Full-time internship
• Location: Remote (with onsite option in Princeton, NJ)
• Pay: $43–$47 hourly
• Team: Simulation Research Group within Siemens Foundational Technology (FT)
• Mission: Develop classical algorithms using quantum-inspired concepts to solve industrial-scale optimization, machine learning, and complex solver problems.
• Tech Stack: Python, PyTorch, JAX, NumPy/SciPy, C++

What You’ll Actually Do
• Research: Research, implement, and benchmark quantum-inspired optimization algorithms for industrially relevant problems.
• Develop: Develop and evaluate quantum-inspired machine learning methods, such as alternative model representations or training strategies.
• Design: Design and implement advanced solvers for large-scale linear or nonlinear problems arising in engineering and industrial applications.
• Compare: Compare quantum-inspired approaches against state-of-the-art classical optimization and machine learning methods on representative industrial use cases.
• Prototype: Prototype scalable implementations in Python and/or C++ suitable for HPC, GPU, or cloud environments.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Operations Research, or another STEM degree from an accredited university.
• Experience: Strong background in quantum computing concepts (e.g., quantum annealing, tensor networks, Quantum-inspired Monte Carlo), with emphasis on classical or quantum-inspired implementations. Background in optimization, machine learning, or numerical methods.
• Skills: Hands-on experience with Python and scientific computing or ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, JAX, NumPy/SciPy). Proficient in English, both written and verbal.
• Bonus: Experience with mathematical programming or large-scale numerical solvers. Experience with C++, HPC, GPU computing, or parallel programming. Familiarity with Linux-based development environments. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary research environment, communicate findings, and manage time independently. Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and located in the U.S. for the duration of the internship.
