Early Career Field Construction Engineer, Chicago, IL

WSP is seeking a full-time Early Career Field Construction Engineer for their Chicago, IL office. This role is a valuable opportunity to join WSP’s PMCM Team and contribute to a growing organization focused on meeting client objectives and solving challenges in the engineering and professional services sector.

Your Impact and Responsibilities

As an Early Career Field Construction Engineer, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Completing training on assigned tasks to develop essential skills and knowledge.
  • Exercising responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, in strict adherence to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Performing additional responsibilities as required by business needs to support project goals.
  • Providing limited office management support for construction management projects.
  • Reviewing and updating project schedules and record drawings to ensure accuracy and progress tracking.
  • Maintaining comprehensive logs of contract documents for easy reference and compliance.
  • Assisting with various construction field work tasks and activities to ensure strict conformance to plans, specifications, and other contract documents.
  • Uploading documents to the project’s designated construction management document control site for organized record-keeping.
  • Performing engineering submittal reviews to ensure compliance with contract documents.
  • Observing material test reports to verify adherence to contract compliance standards.
  • Performing diverse office engineer duties, which include, but are not limited to:
    • Reviewing material submittals for contract compliance.
    • Taking detailed meeting minutes during project discussions.
    • Processing contractors’ pay estimates efficiently.
    • Responding to Request for Information (RFIs) promptly and accurately.
    • Performing quantity calculations for project materials and progress.
  • Reading and interpreting complex construction drawings and specifications, actively identifying any discrepancies or conflicts within the documents.
  • Reviewing contractor’s daily construction reports for accuracy, thoroughness, and consistency.
  • Consulting with the Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, proactively recommending solutions, assisting in the resolution of issues, and acting as a liaison with the engineer of record.
  • Identifying some discrepancies or conflicts within project documents and gaining familiarity with the quality of work performed through the use of inspection checklists.

Who You Are – Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Experience: 0 to 1 years of relevant post-education experience.
  • Prior Engagement: Prior internship experience, leadership experience, or relevant coursework demonstrating foundational knowledge and commitment.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Communication: Strong technical writing, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Work Ethic: Detail-oriented with a strong emphasis on producing quality work products.
  • License: Valid Illinois Driver’s license.
  • Authorization: The selected candidate must have the ability to work in the United States immediately.
  • Safety Commitment: Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Office Engineering Experience: Experience with Office Engineering duties on large construction projects.
  • Labor Compliance: Experience with Labor Compliance and verification of Certified Payrolls.
  • Certifications: E.I.T. (Engineer-in-Training) certification is preferred.
  • Software: Experience with e-builder preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Expected Salary: $65,600 – $90,200
