What You’ll Actually Do
• Instruction: Teach lower-division college courses in Fire Technology, advancing equitable student learning in accordance with established course outlines.
• Assessment: Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations, informing students of their academic progress and course requirements.
• Record Keeping: Maintain accurate attendance, scholastic, and other required records, submitting them according to published policies and deadlines.
• Curriculum Development: Develop, implement, and assess student learning outcomes for courses and programs, using results for continuous improvement.
• Professional Development: Participate in professional development activities to fulfill mandatory FLEX requirements and maintain current knowledge in the subject matter area.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree plus two years of professional experience related to Fire Technology, OR an Associate Degree plus six years of directly related professional experience, OR a California Community College Instructor credential appropriate to the subject.
• Experience: A minimum of two to six years of professional experience directly related to Fire Technology, depending on the academic degree held, including experience in the Fire Service.
• Skills: Knowledge of and ability to appraise the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, along with sensitivity to their needs; current understanding of assessment processes for improving student success; ability to work effectively with students, staff, and public agencies in coordinating fire training activities.
• Bonus: Ability to develop curriculum or services that stress innovation and improve student equity; enthusiasm for the learning process and commitment to supportive relationships with students and colleagues; willingness to examine and remediate instructional practices to effectively engage and support traditionally underserved students; experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Fire Technology.
