Subrogation Specialist | USAA

The Tone:
This is a full-time role at USAA, located in San Antonio, TX, focusing on specialized Auto and/or Property claims service. USAA’s mission is to empower its military community members and their families to achieve financial security through highly competitive products, exceptional service, and trusted advice. As a Subrogation Specialist, you will operate within defined guidelines to evaluate physical damages on claims against USAA and determine the proper indemnity owed. This role is crucial in upholding USAA’s core values of honesty, integrity, loyalty, and service by ensuring fair and accurate claim resolution.

• Mission: This person evaluates physical damages on claims made by other insurance carriers against USAA and determines the proper indemnity owed.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Coverage Application: Confirm that coverage has been properly applied to a loss and coordinate a response with the appropriate Auto or Property adjuster when a coverage issue is identified.
• Claim Evaluation: Apply foundational knowledge of P&C insurance industry products, services, processes, policy contracts, common law, contract law, state statutes, evidence, and damages to evaluate claims.
• Settlement Negotiation: Review and audit estimates thoroughly, then effectively negotiate and settle claims within prescribed limits of authority with contractors, adjusters, or insured representatives.
• Recovery Identification: Recognize and meticulously document opportunities for subrogation, SIU (Special Investigative Unit) referrals, and salvage, referring them to the appropriate units.
• Deductible Reimbursement: Process and ensure the timely reimbursement of policyholders’ deductibles after a successful recovery is made.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Possess a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma, and the ability to acquire and maintain an insurance adjuster license within 90 days across a designated number of attempts. This role requires developing knowledge of common law, contract law, and negligence laws.
• Experience: Up to 1 year of professional experience in subrogation claims adjusting or broader auto or property claims adjusting.
• Skills: Strong written communication skills with excellent attention to detail and accuracy, alongside the ability to confidently resolve issues and negotiate fair settlements. Developing knowledge of P&C insurance industry products, services, processes, and policy contracts is also essential.
• Bonus: Candidates are preferred to have 3 or more years of dedicated auto claims experience, and ideally, currently possess an active auto adjuster license.
