About the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) Internship

Work Location and Duration

  • Location: In-Person. This internship is designed to be full-time and in person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate. Remote/hybrid arrangements may be accommodated on an exceptional basis.
  • Expected Duration: Up to six (6) months, typically three (3) to six (6) months depending on departmental needs.
  • Work Schedule: Full-time, five days per week (35 hours).

The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is paramount in leading, supporting, and overseeing the United Nations security management system (UNSMS) worldwide. Recognized as a global leader in Security Risk Management principles, UNDSS plays a crucial role in enabling the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programmes and activities, especially in the most complex and challenging environments, while optimizing resources. Its core mission is to empower United Nations system programme activities through trusted security leadership and innovative solutions.

About the Operational Resilience Section (ORS)

UNDSS is seeking enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals to join its Operational Resilience Section (ORS). ORS is dedicated to enhancing the Department’s overall resilience. It achieves this through a proactive, forward-looking approach, focusing on the creation and implementation of new ideas, methodologies, and solutions to adapt to an ever-evolving global security landscape.

Internship Focus

The primary focus of this internship is to assist ORS in generating and communicating data-driven analyses and insights. These analyses and insights are vital for supporting informed decision-making processes within the Department.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of a staff member in the ORS, the intern will provide essential support to ORS’s strategic and operational objectives. Duties to be performed may include the following:

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy agentic AI solutions leveraging Microsoft Copilot Studio, utilizing low-code/no-code methodologies.
  • Integrate Copilot Studio solutions with existing enterprise systems using the Power Platform and related technologies.
  • Collaborate effectively with stakeholders to identify opportunities for AI-driven automation and translate specific business needs into robust technical solutions.
  • Actively monitor and research emerging trends within Copilot Studio, Power Platform, and the broader enterprise AI/automation landscape to inform solution design and best practices.
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy comprehensive end-to-end automation solutions using the Power Platform, including Robotic Process Automation (RPA).
  • Analyze existing business processes to identify prime candidates for automation and define scalable, fit-for-purpose digital solutions.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Special Skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet the following stringent conditions:

Academic Requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); and graduated within one year, OR
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); or have graduated within one year.
  • Official Written Proof from the University Supporting one of the above possibilities must be attached to the Inspira Application. (Please note: You will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage.)

Field of Study:

The field of study must be one of the following or closely related to:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Information Technology
  • Computer Science
  • Data Science
  • Engineering
  • Information Management
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Data Analytics
  • Business Analytics
  • Operations Research
  • Data Visualization or Information Design

General Skills & Interests:

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications, including MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and possess a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication, including the ability to prepare reports and presentations.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is considered an advantage.

Additional Important Information for Interns

  • No Financial Remuneration: Interns are NOT financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Costs and Arrangements: All costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the SOLE responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Visa Requirements: Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
  • Family Relations: Applicants who are children or siblings of a staff member shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the United Nations. An applicant who bears a relationship to a staff member or any other family relationship may be engaged as an intern, provided he or she shall not be assigned to the same work unit of the staff member nor placed under the direct or indirect supervision of the staff member.
  • Conduct: Interns must observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures, and directives of the Organization. They must respect the impartiality and independence required of the UN and refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on the UN.
  • Confidentiality: Interns may not communicate at any time to the media or any external source any information that has become known to them by reason of their association with the UN that has not been made public. These obligations also apply after the end of the internship.
  • Property Rights: The UN shall be entitled to all property rights, including patents, copyrights, and trademarks, regarding material prepared by interns that bears a direct relation to or is made in consequence of the services provided under the internship.
