About the Job: Operational Risk Management (ORM) Summer Intern
This internship is within the Global Risk & Compliance (GRC) Organization, an independent function led by the Chief Risk Officer. GRC’s primary objective is to ensure American Express operates in a safe, sound, and fully compliant manner with all applicable regulatory expectations. It achieves this by creating and maintaining the overall risk management framework, performing independent risk assessments, and monitoring applicable risks. The Operational Risk Management (ORM) team, a part of GRC, specifically focuses on facilitating and monitoring the implementation of effective operational risk management programs across the company, overseeing risk ownership throughout various business units, products, and processes.
This internship offers a unique opportunity for Master’s degree students to gain broad exposure to risk management practices within a global financial services environment.
How You Will Make an Impact:
As an ORM Summer Intern, you will contribute to high-impact initiatives designed to protect American Express from operational risks across diverse business units, processes, and geographies. You will gain hands-on experience by:
• Supporting Risk Assessments: Assisting in the execution of operational risk assessments and thematic reviews to identify operational risks within business processes and systems.
• Evaluating Risk Practices: Helping to evaluate and oversee the adequacy and effectiveness of risk management practices, controls, and processes across the businesses.
• Analyzing and Reporting Risk Data: Assisting in tracking and analyzing key risk indicators (KRIs) and developing reporting insights, including the aggregation and communication of operational risk reporting.
• Maintaining Dashboards: Helping to maintain risk dashboards, monitor KRIs, and compile thematic risk reports to provide actionable insights on emerging trends and systemic risks.
• Contributing to Initiatives: Participating in cross-functional risk initiatives that strengthen risk governance and oversight, which may include project management responsibilities.
The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate scenarios.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Finance, Economics, Business, Risk Management, Data Analytics, or a related field.
• Expected graduation date between December 2026 and June 2027.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills within a team-oriented, matrix organization.
• A keen interest in operational risk management, governance, issues management, and auditing/assessing internal controls.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Familiarity with financial services or related industries (advantageous but not required).
• Experience with data analysis tools (Tableau, SQL, etc.) is a plus.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• More than one year of prior corporate work experience is a plus.
Salary and Benefits:
The expected hourly salary range for this internship is $38.45 to $87.00, plus a sign-on bonus. Final pay will be determined based on location, experience, and other job-related factors.
