Job description, detailed

This is a Student Tutor position within The Tutoring Center, which operates as part of the Learning Commons at Lower Columbia College.

Key responsibilities of a Student Tutor include:
• Providing 1:1 supplemental support in individual classes.
• Facilitating group study sessions.
• Answering basic informational and directional questions.
• Delivering quality customer service to a diverse client-base.
• Providing tutoring specifically to LCC students, working with them to develop individualized plans.
• Modeling and encouraging collaborative study strategies.
• Creating and managing educational resources.
• Utilizing various technologies such as the tutor schedule, Zoom, email, and Google Chat.
• Employing effective written and verbal communication.
• Performing front desk activities, including scheduling and checkouts.
• Executing opening and/or closing duties for the center.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Tutors are expected to perform duties according to library standards of accuracy, timeliness, tact, and confidentiality.

The role demands flexibility to work between 5 and 19 hours a week. This is exclusively a student position, requiring applicants to be current students at Lower Columbia College.

Required Training:
• Attendees must complete 5 hours of in-person training to meet College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) requirements.
• Attendance at all tutor trainings is mandatory.

Support for the physical, virtual, and social environment in the tutoring center by ensuring efficient resource use, maximizing student access to academic support services, and fostering positive relationships with students and colleagues.

Job Requirements (for eligibility and continued employment):
• Obtain instructor approval from an instructor or faculty member for the area(s) you wish to tutor.
• Successfully complete an interview and be accepted by the Coordinator.
• Complete a self-evaluation every quarter and conference with the Tutor Coordinator in the last two weeks of the quarter.
• Maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative and quarterly GPA. Falling below this GPA will lead to dismissal, except in extenuating circumstances approved by the Tutoring Coordinator.
• Attend all required tutor trainings.

Minimum Qualifications:
Good Academic Standing.
• A B or higher grade in the specific course(s) to be tutored.
• A strong professionalism and customer service mindset.
• A passion for serving students in a high-volume, quick-paced environment.
• Patience and confidence in working with a diverse student body.
• An interest in teaching techniques and digital literacy.
• Ability to pass a background check.
Must be enrolled at LCC to be eligible for hire.
