Job Description

This posting is for multiple openings within the Fall Undergraduate Internship Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Program Duration: The internship is scheduled to run from September 1, 2025, to December 26, 2025.
Application & Selection Timeline: Applications for these positions will be closed on August 29, 2025. Computing mentors will have until September 5, 2025, to finalize their selections for the fall program.
Target Audience: The program is designed for undergraduate level students who are seeking an opportunity to engage in practical research to advance their educational goals.
Pay Range:
• For the 705.1 level: $22.80 – $31.00 Hourly
• For the 714.0 level: $25.90 – $32.80 Hourly
• *Note:• This position follows a step structure, with step placement determined by the applicant’s most recently completed academic year.
Job Purpose: Selected interns will provide technical and/or research support to various projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide technical and/or research support to projects primarily in the areas of computational science, cyber defense, computer science, numerical methods, mathematics, or other related fields.
• Work collaboratively with scientists, engineers, and technical staff members.
Participate in research in assigned areas under close supervision.
Gather and analyze data and information to support scientific research.
Participate in research planning and evaluation discussions.
Attend relevant on-site seminars (expected attendance of at least one per week).
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Eligibility to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is mandatory. (This generally restricts citizens of China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea without dual US citizenship or legal permanent residence from accessing specific non-public areas).
• Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution.
• Must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in relevant fields such as Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, or other related disciplines.
GPA of 3.0 or higher is required.
• Demonstrated ability to apply basic computational science and/or mathematical principles to solve technical problems.
• Proven capability to adapt and thrive in challenging situations, showing resilience and problem-solving skills.
Effective communication skills and the ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas.
• Familiarity with personal computers and proficiency with software like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Security Clearance & Background Check:
• No security clearance is required for the internship.
• However, if an assignment exceeds 179 cumulative days within a calendar year, interns must undergo the Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process, which includes an online background investigation and approval. (This PIV process does not apply to foreign nationals).
Additional Important Information:
• A post-offer, pre-employment drug test is required for external applicants, including testing for marijuana use as Federal Law applies to LLNL as a Federal Contractor.
