Year Round – R&D Fellowship Graduate Intern | Sandia National Laboratories

The Tone:
This is an internship at Sandia National Laboratories, located in Albuquerque, NM (Hybrid). Sandia is the nation’s premier science and engineering lab, contributing to national security and technology innovation through its advanced simulation and computing capabilities. This role is crucial for supporting the National Nuclear Security Administration’s mission to extend the lifetime of nuclear weapons by developing state-of-the-art computer simulation tools. The work performed by these interns contributes directly to security, peace, and freedom worldwide.

The TL;DR

• Team: Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program within the NNSA Office of Advanced Simulation and Computing, in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories.
• Mission: Participate in collaborative research across a wide range of computer science and computational science and engineering areas, contributing to advanced simulation capabilities for national security.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Research: Participate in collaborative research across a wide range of areas in computer science, computational science, and engineering, encompassing both theoretical and experimental aspects.
• Application: Apply computational methods to scientific and engineering applications such as shock and impact physics, magneto-hydro-dynamics, and computational fluid dynamics.
• Develop: Contribute to the development of state-of-the-art computer simulation capabilities within the Advanced Simulation and Computing program.
• Explore: Investigate advanced research areas including computer architectures, systems software, scalable solvers, optimization, uncertainty quantification, and scientific machine learning.
• Support: Support the National Nuclear Security Administration’s mission by enhancing tools for extending the lifetime of nuclear weapons without underground testing.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Earned bachelor’s degree and currently enrolled full-time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program.
• Experience: Currently employed at a PSAAP IV research institute and funded by one of the following PSAAP IV centers: University of Florida, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, Oregon State University, University of Virginia, Brown University, University of California at San Diego, Michigan State University, and University of New Mexico.
• Skills: Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0; ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during the summer; receiving financial support through a fellowship or educational institute program; legally authorized to work in the United States of America.
