Test Development Intern | Lumentum

The Tone:
This is an internship at Lumentum. Lumentum is committed to bringing passion and customer focus to the business, building fiber laser products and aiming for wild growth. This role supports the High Power Laser NPI Team in designing and automating test systems for these products. The work aims to enhance product quality, reliability, and manufacturing efficiency, offering practical experience in laser characterization and statistical data analysis within a high-tech production environment.

What You’ll Actually Do
• System Design: Design and develop test and measurement systems for laser characterization, reliability, quality, and manufacturing applications, ensuring robustness, accuracy, and repeatability.
• Data Analysis: Plan and execute statistical experiments, perform data analysis including GR&R, Cp/Cpk, and SPC metrics to assess product performance and integrity.
• Innovation: Propose innovative methods to measure critical parameters that are currently difficult or impossible to measure.
• Documentation: Document test procedures, system architecture, and experimental results to maintain clear records.
• AI Exploration: Explore AI-assisted data analysis techniques to improve anomaly detection, yield monitoring, and root cause identification.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Electrical Engineering, Computer science, Physics, or a related technical field. This is an early career internship.
• Experience: Practical experience with optical test instrumentation such as optical power meters, photodiodes, spectrometers, optical spectrum analyzers, and beam quality measurement equipment.
• Skills: Proficiency with Python, LabVIEW, and SQL; familiarity with production SPC, GR&R, Cp/Cpk, and statistical analysis tools like JMP; strong written and verbal communication abilities.
• Bonus: Experience with image processing or machine vision systems; familiarity with data science, machine learning, or AI-based analytics tools; experience working with large datasets and building data visualization dashboards.
