Tax Intern, State and Local Tax | BDO USA, PC

• Pay: $32–$45 hourly
• Mission: Assist in basic research, analysis, and compliance related to state and local tax (SALT) issues, contributing to client service and minimizing tax burdens.
• Tech Stack: Caseware, Go Systems, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
What You’ll Actually Do
• Research: Conduct basic research and analysis on state and local tax (SALT) issues.
• Compliance: Prepare basic tax returns and other tax filings using tax software with appropriate supervision.
• Drafting: Draft tax memoranda, other tax documents, and responses to notices from state taxing authorities.
• Analysis: Assist in preparing voluntary disclosure agreements for sales and use tax, income tax, and unclaimed property, and create models for tax exposure analysis.
• Consulting: Participate in client meetings and the audit defense of client returns and tax positions with experienced tax professionals.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, Law (JD), or an LLM program.
• Experience: This is an early career internship role; no prior professional experience is explicitly required.
• Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to research taxation topics and compose written analysis; basic knowledge of accounting and tax theory.
• Bonus: Leadership experience; prior internship or other work experience within an accounting setting or public accounting; membership and participation in accounting or finance organizations at the college level.
