Tax Intern, State and Local Tax – Summer 2027 (Atlanta) | BDO USA

The Tone:
This is a seasonal internship at BDO USA, located in Atlanta, GA. BDO is a global professional services firm that provides assurance, tax, and advisory services to clients across the U.S. and worldwide. This role is crucial as it offers an energetic self-starter the opportunity to gain foundational, hands-on experience in state and local tax, directly contributing to client compliance and tax planning. The intern will work alongside experienced professionals, building critical relationships and developing practical skills essential for a successful career in tax.

What You’ll Actually Do
Tax Compliance: Prepare and complete basic tax returns, other tax filings, and voluntary disclosure agreements for sales and use tax, income tax, and unclaimed property, ensuring client adherence to applicable authorities and firm standards.
Research and Analysis: Conduct basic research on federal and state tax issues, contributing to the drafting of tax memoranda and other documents on various tax matters.
Client Response Support: Assist in drafting responses to notices received from state taxing authorities and prepare models for tax and unclaimed property exposure analysis.
Tax Consulting and Planning: Learn the fundamentals of state tax planning by partnering with experienced SALT tax professionals and participate in client meetings as appropriate.
Software Utilization: Apply tax-related software, including Caseware and Go Systems, to efficiently complete assigned tax returns under appropriate supervision.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or another relevant field, a Juris Doctorate (J.D) program, or a Master of Laws (LLM) program.
• Experience: No specific years of experience required; the role is designed for students. Prior internship or work experience within an accounting setting or public accounting is preferred.
• Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to follow instructions and multi-task independently or within a team, basic knowledge of accounting and tax theory, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Bonus: Leadership experience and membership/participation in accounting or finance organizations at the college level are preferred.
