Sustainability Zero Waste Intern | Johnson County Community College

The Tone:
This is an internship at Johnson County Community College (JCCC), located in Overland Park, KS. This role is crucial for supporting the college’s objective of achieving a zero-waste campus, aiming for 90% or more material diversion from landfills. It involves hands-on work in waste management, community engagement, and promoting sustainability practices across the campus.

The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Type: Student employee, up to 20 hours per week

• Pay: $15.34 hourly

• Mission: Support the college in becoming a zero-waste campus by diverting materials from landfills.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Operations: Perform daily scheduled pickups for waste, recycling, and food/compost, including sorting, loading, and moving materials.
• Logistics: Make deliveries and pick-ups both on and off campus, providing support for surplus property and redistribution initiatives.
• Education: Manage all aspects of the compost program, which includes conducting educational outreach and site tours.
• Engagement: Work at events hosted by the Center for Sustainability, involving running games and interacting with attendees.
• Service: Provide customer service and maintain appropriate documentation to further campus sustainability initiatives.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Student. Understanding of sustainability as it relates to materials management and life cycle analysis.
• Experience: Must be a current student with availability for 16-20 hours per week during regular work hours, including occasional evenings and weekends for special events. Requires a valid driver’s license.
• Skills: Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities, effective communication with diverse groups, attention to detail, ability to work independently, and a professional, friendly manner.
