Summer Internship – Transportation Department

This full-time (40hrs/wk) internship provides students with a hands-on immersion into the operational core of rail transportation. Interns will gain practical experience and deepen their understanding of BNSF’s dedication to efficient and sustainable transportation services. By working closely with experienced professionals on real-world projects, interns will enhance their skills and knowledge, setting a solid foundation for a potential career in the transportation industry.

Successful Interns may be hired as full-time Management Trainees upon graduation.

monthly Salary: $4,785 per month

Key Responsibilities May Include:

Learn about the working logistics of a fast-paced railroad through a challenging program.
Manage railroad terminal operations.
Work on specific logistics projects.
Assist supervisors in managing train crews.
Interact with other Operating departments, including Mechanical and Engineering.
Develop leadership, teamwork, clear communication, adaptability, and resilience.

Daily Work Environment:

• Mixed indoor office and outdoor safety-sensitive environment.
• Diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
• Walking and performing work on uneven surfaces.
• Working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.
Personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, and gloves) is required and provided by BNSF.

Training:

Two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas: company overview, networking with leaders.
Ongoing project support and practical field training at an assigned location.

Travel and Relocation:

Travel and Relocation are required for the summer.
Interns must be flexible with their location, as they could be moved depending on business needs.
Must have reliable transportation to and from work.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

• Legally authorized to work in the United States and will be at least eighteen (18) years old upon hire.
• Does not require sponsorship to obtain, maintain, or extend authorization to work in the United States.
• Able to visually distinguish among red, blue, green, yellow and lunar (clear light) colors & able to see at night AND I am able to hear and, with training, distinguish auditory signals.
• Capable of working in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and can safely perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions or in a shop, terminal, or field environment.
• Role includes climbing ladders and navigating uneven surfaces, with the ability to travel up to 25% of the time based on business needs.
• Able and willing to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) upon hire, for the summer, and travel to other locations as required.
• Pursuing a Bachelors or Graduate degree in Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, Business, Communications, Technical, OR a similar degree program from an accredited university.
• Have and will maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA.
• Have LESS THAN three (3) years of professional work experience, EXCLUDING internships, part-time jobs, or positions held while pursuing my undergraduate and/or graduate degree.
• Have access to reliable transportation for the duration of the internship to and from my assigned BNSF location.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior internship experience or less than 3 years of work experience in Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, Logistics, or a related field.
• Have or have held a leadership position in a campus, community, or extracurricular organization.
