Summer Internship in the Transportation Department
This is a paid, full-time (40 hours/week) internship in the Transportation Department, offering a hands-on experience in the core of rail transportation. The internship runs from June 9, 2025 to August 1, 2025, with 21 positions available. The monthly salary is $4,785.
Key Responsibilities:
• Learn the Logistics of Railroad Operations: Spend the summer on an assigned Division (determined before your start date) and gain insights into the fast-paced world of railroad logistics.
• Terminal Operations Management: Learn how to manage railroad terminal operations, work on specific logistics projects, and assist supervisors in managing train crews.
• Interdepartmental Collaboration: Interact with other operating departments like Mechanical and Engineering to gain a comprehensive understanding of field operations.
• Develop Key Skills: Cultivate leadership, teamwork, communication, adaptability, and resilience to overcome challenges and meet deadlines in a dynamic work environment.
Work Environment:
• Mixed Indoor/Outdoor: Work will be conducted in both indoor office and outdoor safety-sensitive environments.
• Variable Weather Conditions: Be prepared to work in diverse weather conditions, including hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet.
• Physical Requirements: Expect walking on uneven surfaces and working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.
• Personal Protective Equipment: BNSF will provide and require the use of personal protective equipment, including a hard hat, safety glasses, and gloves.
Travel and Relocation:
• Relocation Required: Relocation is required for the summer, and interns may be moved depending on business needs.
• Travel Required: Travel is required up to 25% of the time, based on business needs.
Training:
• Two-Day Orientation: The internship begins with a two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, providing a company overview and networking opportunities.
• On-the-Job Training: Ongoing support will be provided for projects, and interns will receive practical field training at their assigned location.
Eligibility Requirements:
• Legal Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and at least 18 years old upon hire.
• Color Vision: Must be able to visually distinguish among red, blue, green, yellow, and clear light colors and be able to see at night.
• Hearing Ability: Must be able to hear and, with training, distinguish auditory signals.
• Work Environment: Must be capable of working in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and safely perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions or in a shop, terminal, or field environment.
• Physical Requirements: Must be able to climb ladders and navigate uneven surfaces.
• Relocation: Must be able and willing to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) for the summer and travel as required.
• Academic Requirements: Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, Business, Communications, Technical, OR a similar degree program from an accredited university.
• GPA: Must have and maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA.
• Work Experience: Must have less than three (3) years of professional work experience, excluding internships, part-time jobs, or positions held while pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.
• Transportation: Must have access to reliable transportation to and from the assigned BNSF location.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior Experience: Prior internship experience or less than 3 years of work experience in Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, Logistics, or a related field is preferred.
• Leadership: Experience in a leadership position in a campus, community, or extracurricular organization is preferred.
